7 Tips for Successful Cake Smash Sessions!

One of the latest trends in memory making is the cake smash photo session! A cake smash session captures the wonderfully messy human being that is your one year old! Here are some tips and tricks to having a successful cake smash session with Create Studioworks!
Get The Right Cake
First things first, avoid fondant icing! Cake smash sessions are all about the smash! Getting a cake with a hard fondant frosting makes this part far more difficult than it needs to be! Second, take the cake out of the fridge a few hours before the session to allow the cake to soften up, making it easier to make the mess! Lastly, the cake MUST be provided by you! The last thing we need is an allergy related issue during the session!
Picking the Outfit
When picking the outfit for your child’s session, remember that simple is better. While you can have a nice outfit for the milestone photos, which take the first 30 minutes of your session, a simple outfit is best when it comes time to smash the cake. Stick with a color that falls into your theme, and don’t be afraid to show skin!
Choosing Your Theme
Now for the fun part. Choosing the theme of the session. Many cake smashes tend to be very simple and use basic colors as a theme. While this is a reliable and simple plan, do not be afraid to get creative! We have seen Firefighters, Lumberjacks, Mickey Mouse themes and more!
Session Timing
One of the biggest factors that comes into play during a cake smash session is your child’s sleep schedule! Try to plan your session after your child’s normal nap time so we don’t run into a tired, cranky baby! As the session goes on, your baby will of course get tired, but the more we get through before that happens, the better!
Bring Toys!
While we have ways of catching your child’s attention in studio, nothing does it better than their favorite toys! A simple stuffed animal, toy car, or even a noise maker helps to get your child looking right where we want them!
Have an escape plan
Cake Smash Sessions are VERY MESSY! Do yourself the favor of bringing extra clothes (for both yourself and your child), some baby wipes, and towels! We keep a few cleanup items on hand in the studio, but it always pays to plan in advance!
Keep It Simple!
The final piece of advice I have is to keep it simple! Avoid over-complicating and over-thinking the process. We are here to work together to have a great session, so if you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to call up and ask!
